Daniel 6 recounts one of the most famous events of divine deliverance in Scripture. Serving as a top administrator under King Darius of Persia, Daniel distinguished himself by an "extraordinary spirit." Jealous rivals manipulated the king into issuing a decree that outlawed prayer to anyone except the king for thirty days.

"Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before." — Daniel 6:10 (NIV)

Praying Three Times a Day Despite the Threat

When the jealous administrators caught Daniel praying, King Darius was heartbroken but bound by Medo-Persian law. Daniel was thrown into the den. The next morning, the king rushed to the den and called out. Daniel replied: "My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight."
